Thank you my friend for the loan of a copy of "The Fifth Sacred Thing". Very amazing book. Stirred many places deep in the core of who I am. The funny thing is that I saw us as a society fast approaching the times that this writer invisioned while writing this book. I don't consider myself an apocalyptic but I do firmly believe that changes are coming and pretty fast and wonder has any preparation truly been made for those "days ahead". Just wondering - my eyes are just now seeing things in a light they never saw before.

Happy New Moon!

I am finally reading Fifth Sacred Thing and it is coming alive all around me...
i am astounded at how scenes and images from this book are appearing in my world.
Last night i was at a gathering of friends saunaing, making music, sharing food and dance...and i realized that there was such a wide spectrum of genders, races, energies all intermingling spontaneously....demonstrating that the positive visions within Fifth Sacred Thing are not mere fantasies.
Also...i am now hypersensitive to situations where people are using water as a profit-weapon...it happens at urban dance events all the time!

The Activism for a better Cascadia begins 7/07/2007:
Join us for the Doug Honours Ceremony were we will gather to honour local/northwest activists and philanthropists by awarding them Doug Flags. This event is the start of the movement, and where else than where it all started 164 years ago at Champoeg (pronounced sham-POO-ee), Oregon. Champoeg features a unique combination of history, nature, and recreation. This is the site where Oregon's (i.e. Cascadia) first provisional government was formed by a historical vote in 1843.
At the event we will discuss future goals and initiatives, networking, participate in history tours, enjoy a potluck picnic, and enjoy a wonderful ceremony.
Reservation is for Riverside lot #3 and our event begins at 8am and ends at 8pm.
Discussion will begin at 11:30am History Tour will begin at 1pm
Potluck Dinner at 5pm
Ceremony will begin at 7pm

Reservation ends at 8pm.
For those who wish to come to the park early you can enjoy swimming,
disc golf, biking, hiking, bird watching, etc.

Directions:
Take I-5 South if traveling form North Cascadia, or take I-5 North if traveling from South Cascadia to exit 278, and then follow these directions:

1. Take exit 278 toward Donald/Aurora National Historic District 0.2 mi
2. Turn right at Ehlen Rd NE 2.5 mi 3 mins

3. Continue on Yergen Rd NE 1.0 mi 1 min

4. Turn right at Case Rd NE 1.4 mi 2 mins

5. Slight left at Champoeg Rd NE 0.9 mi 2 mins

The 5th Sacred Thing and Ecotopia

so would anyone like to compare and contrast The 5th Sacred Thing and Ecotopia.

I will start.

Though I love the basic idea of Ecotopia as an ecologically minded country and lots of "Pagan" elements I do have the problem with its 1970s limited views of race, ethnicity, gender and sexualities... but we do have to remember it was written in the mid 1970s and even Ernest Callenbach would say his second book, Ecotopia Emerging (written 10 years later), had better character development and better ideas.

This is so so SKOOKUM (cool), I just stumbled across this site and its
exactly what I would like Cascadians to return to be. Take a look at

The word "chee" is Chinook Wawa for "new" and "siwash" is Chinook Wawa
for "Indiginous Person" (meaning "American Indian") derrived from the
French word for "savage". Ok Chinook Jargon is not up to modern
Cascadian English political correctness standards, but I believe if we
can re-incorporate Chinook Wawa into our daily language we will end up
with a new synthesis of Chee Chinook or a very very distinct Cascadian
English.

I'm just reading the book, and I wanna live there!!!! I want to meet more people interested in discussing the romantic/family "pods" and sexuality displayed in the book.
How can we change the world, so that in 50 years it will be ok for polys to walk hand in hand openly to live in multigenerational multirelationship families, where 50 years ago it was not acceptable for blacks and whites to do the same.

my brother sigh

I gave the book to my brother.....he's was an "anarchist" a freedom educator at one point...a drug dealer for another time in his life....now he has a ex-wife and a 3yr old...i gave him this book thinking "he would love it!!!" and what does he do......after about 6 months go by and i ask "so, did you ever get around to reading that book?" and he says " well, i got through the first hundred pages, and once the guys started butt-fucking i gave up" with a chuckle....

sigh*

sometimes i feel like there is no hope...that even my own brother....a brother who we have done many hallucengenics together.....been out in the desert together..have seen other worlds....has become closed into the borg (and religion since his ex-wife was an intense christian) and is not caring about the environment in every way.....always calls me hippy in a negative tone....I do love him no matter what....this happen months ago and it's still haunting me....

I know there's hope, i know i (we) have to BE THE CHANGE we wish to see in the world.....i think i need to move away from the city in the next few yrs (after i get my M.A in holistic health and education) and just be.....

any other similar stories? rejections of the book?....sounds crazy to me, but i'm sure it's happened many times.....different ways of thinking scares people...it's a shame...

This book changed my life - as I'm sure it did other people's too. My parnter and I have actually decided to start a women's household in Austin, Tx and use the book as a model - well, one of them. After reading the 5th we both realized that we wanted to dedicate ourselves to creating and living in community adn work on bringing some of the things in the 5th to life. anyone know of othe people buidling households based on the book's ideas?

She deserves to come home. Her mental/emotional and spiritual health is starting to deteriorate and I am scared for her. She needs the trauma healing that an Iraq Vet who has been raped deserves.

They took my daughter in. Please help!

My daughter refused to go back to Iraq for a second deployment. In the past 6 months she has been dealing with her PTSD and getting the help we need legally for her defense to get her out of the Army. We need your help.

EPD came to our house, barged in grabbed my arm and took Suzanne into custody. We need to be making some noise. Calling Peter DeFazio's office and asking him to look into getting her released. 541-465-6732. We also need to start gathering up funds for her legal defense. The EPD officers were walking around our house with flashlights and knocked. I opened the door and they asked me if she was here. They stepped into the house and I told them not to, then, I stepped in his way he grabbed my arm and twisted it around. I said you are grabbing my arm and that hurts. Then Suzanne came out and they handcuffed her and took her off to Lane County Jail. They never showed me the warrant and told me that Ft. Lewis sent them a pick up order.
She was so brave and said she would be ok, but I saw the tears in her eyes.

Other Visionary Fiction

Hello all, i just found this tribe and I am very excited that there are so many others out there who have been touched by this book. Since it entered my life I have passed it on and seen the magic unfold strongly in my own life. My post tonight is in regards to the sadness that i felt after finishing this book and wondering where i could find more books in this genre that are also powerful and sweet and activational. I read a lot of non-fiction new age type stuff and i really just want some good fiction in my life that touches upon the magic that i experience in my own visions and journeys and dreams. Spiral Dance in Hardcover

Hi,

I thought someone here might be interested in a book I have for sale. It is a limited edition (500 printed) copy of the 10 anniversary edition of the Spiral Dance in hardcover (leatherbound) with hard slipcase. It is autographed sort of "generically" (Blessed Be, Starhawk) and then once again when I first met her, then again after we knew each other for a while. There is also a pic of her and I together at Reclaiming Witch Camp 1989 (i think ... it may have been '90) stuck inside. We look like a couple of exhausted Jewitches. She was a teacher at that camp and I was a co-organizer.

It is in beautiful condition with gilt edges (the gold is showing slight wear due to age, but the book is otherwise pristine, as is the slipcase).

I wouldn't know what to charge for it. As I said there were only 500 printed. I have never seen another for sale. It happened that I own a bookstore and was lucky enought to get a copy (Herman Slater from Magickal Childe sent it to me I think).

Starhawk told me she rented a pile of movies and sat with the caligrapher who numbered them as she autographed them. That witchcamp was a blast. I recall solar energy being used in the Bay Area in the book, so I think this post is relevant.

There's a new solar system that's (relatively) inexpensive. Although it only provides 10-15% of a homes electricity, one coal plant could be shut down for every 300,000 of these that are used. Come and study magic and ritual in a week long
intensive.

Witch Camp is offered to women and men at all levels
of experience. Newcomers can learn the basic skills of
magic and ritual, working with the elements, movement,
sound and the mythological and historical framework of
the Goddess Tradition. Advanced classes offer the
chance to apply the tools of ritual to personal
healing and empowerment, or a focus on taking the
Craft out into the world, creating public ritual,
ongoing groups, and healing issues surrounding
leadership and power. This event is a deeply moving,
life changing week and also a constant experiment in
temporary village life. We will also look at ways of
bringing this work and inspiration into our everyday
lives. Creating powerful, joyful times.

This year Witchcamp will be held at the Mendocino
Woodlands, located just far enough outside the town of
Mendocino to avoid coastal fog. The camp is set among
a mature Redwood/Douglas Fir forest, creating a
beautiful, peaceful setting. The cabins are rustic,
but pretty. Camping is also an option. A small river
runs through the camp, which is actually the home of
steelhead trout.

BOOKS AND TREE FLESH

I recently saw the Lord Of The Rings exhibit at Boston's Muesuem Of Science. While some of us have comminque with Trees Spirits etc. Treebeard standing before me at the exhibit brought this thought to mind. We often look towards consuming the resources around us without taking into account the wasting of resources.Books while they can be helpful, and all what are the alternatives?. Have we outgrown the need for newspapers?. Books?. How can we enjoy the information into maybe an alternative technology?. I've read about e-ink for a while perhaps that could be one.

If there could be just one book that you could keep which one would it be?.

While Treebreard can appear on-screen and in literature capturing an audience. How many out there have talked with the Tree Spirits?.
