Re: : The movie
Sun, September 26, 2004 - 12:55 PMYES!!!
I thought of Nicole Ari Parker(from "The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love") as Madrone, maybe Jamie Foxx from "In Living Color" as Bird, an aged Meryl Streep as Maya, and that's all the movie stars I can think of right now.
AND- I think it would be awesome to have Tiffa's ONDA designs futuristic costume/clothing as the attire the characters would dress in and Marisa's pyrogems jewelry as the adornments they would wear. Their work can be seen at ondadesign.tribe.net and pyrogems.tribe.net -

Re: : The movie
Sun, October 3, 2004 - 1:49 PMmovies from books like this one can be soooo disappointing. the question about main stream actors - exactly! Would Halle Berry play Madrone? (actually... hmmm.)
recently I've enjoyed underground films with people playing themselves, and maybe Starhawk has some "real" people in mind herself, now that would be cool.

The movie
Mon, October 4, 2004 - 2:13 PM............no main streamers except as extra's to bring in more viewer
i think it would be amazing to get people who believe in these power healers that are not just acting but also know what an aura is . -

Tue, October 12, 2004 - 5:06 AMGreetings, I'm a newbie here and love the idea of a film!. Everyone has mentioned about Actors...what about a Director?... -
-
-
Re: The movie
Sat, October 16, 2004 - 11:14 PMor perhaps starhawk's friend donna read, who's an excellent director.
starhawk and donna have collaborated on several films together. in addition to the women and spirituality triology( www.directcinema.com/dcl/title.php ), they recently released a movie on the life of archaeologist marija gimbutas.
has anyone else seen "signs out of time"?

Re: The movie
Thu, January 27, 2005 - 10:48 AMAfter just finishing the book this last weekend, I gave the film idea a lot of thought. I realized that to do it any justice, it should be done as a mini-series or expanded into the strugle for the Southlands as a full TV series. If only there was a network with enough heart and soul to produce it. (?Sci-Fi Channel?) Well, let's think for a moment, there are xtian TV networks all over, there is even a gay network, why not a Pagan or Progressive network? I think it could work. I'm going to start a new thread on this. Who's with me?
Peace,
Otter. -

Re: The movie
Thu, January 27, 2005 - 12:09 PMi would really hate to see the way that sci-fi channel would screw up "Fifth Sacred Thing" after the way they "adapted" and "whitewashed" Ursula K. LeGuin's "Earthsea" trilogy.
race is crucial to Starhawk's story as well and sci-fi would likely try to de-politicize "Fifth Scared Thing" in order to increase its mainstream appeal.
check out LeGuin's comments on the sci-fi adapatation of her story at:

Re: The movie
Thu, January 27, 2005 - 1:46 PMWow, I had no idea. It's been forever since I read the Earthsea books and I never saw the Sci-Fi Chnl's adapatation. Well, I guess that ansers my question. Now to find or start a production company that would do it justice. I went to witchvox and had some luck. -

Re: The movie
Thu, January 27, 2005 - 2:06 PMHere is one production company I found in New York. I wonder what they would say if someone showed up on their doorstep with a script and a budget?

Re: The movie
Thu, January 27, 2005 - 11:21 PMI have no experience with making movies but ever since I read this book - which DRAMATICALLY changed my life - I have been thinking about the movie. If the ball ever gets rolling I would be thrilled to devote time, energy, love and funds to the project.
-
Re: The movie
Thu, January 27, 2005 - 11:39 PMactually, all we need is the budget ;D
starhawk could adapt the script herself.
AND she's already got a small production company, as i mentioned in a post above regarding the other films she's worked on with donna read.
the trick would be to raise a sizeable chunk of change without resorting to corporate sponsorship. -

Re: The movie

Re: The movie
Sat, January 29, 2005 - 12:12 PMI think the first thing to do would be to contact Starhawk. I don't think it would be proper to do anything without her concent. But in the mean time, why not create a tribe to collect interested people? After that I would say we would need a web site to explain the project and give production updates. Also, alot of non-profit websites are using paypal to collect donations. And by donating, you would get to put a link on the site.
Ok, I'm just brain storming here, I personally would like this to be a non-profit film. It just wouldn't be right for a small few to get rich of off a story like this. And I'm pretty sure that Starhawk would agree.
Why not do the donations like we're selling shares? Depending on what percentage of the budget an org donates, that org would get back that exact percentage of the profits from the film. And this would only pertain to non-profit orgs becouse if the project is non-profit (501c3) itself then donations by individuals would be tax deductable.
I know that it takes a wile to qualify for 501c3 statius, so it might be better to find an existing org to umbrella the project for the time being.
just a few thoughts for now.
May you never hunger,

Re: The movie
Sat, January 29, 2005 - 6:42 PMthe best way to get a hold of star is through mer, her personal assistant. details are available at
www.starhawk.org/
i've worked with boths star and mer in the past and they're awesome, but very busy. star travels a lot.
so, if folks are seriously thinking about getting in touch with her, it would be helpful for us to first draw out a proposal with our intentions and strategies to raise $$$ -

Re: The movie
Sat, January 29, 2005 - 9:58 PM"so, if folks are seriously thinking about getting in touch with her, it would be helpful for us to first draw out a proposal with our intentions and strategies to raise $$$"
Too true. And since you already have a relationship with Star and her P.A., could we ask you to be our contact person?
First, to all thoughs interested in participating: I would like to call for a concensus on the film being not-for-profit?
To explain my position, I believe that for this story to take a true hold on it's audience, the way it is made should reflect and exemplify the ideals it puts forth. It's great for a Hollywood movie to preach brotherhood and cooperation, but when the owner of the studio is taking home ten points of the gross and the grip can barely aford to pay his rent, the truth of the piece is lost. For this film to speak true, it needs to be a community effort from start to finish.
Gotta go for now. -
-
Re: The movie
Sun, January 30, 2005 - 7:04 PMi would be willing to help other contact person/s initiate contact with star and her assistant regarding this proposal.
but i'm involved with so many projects right now that i can't fully commit to another one at the moment.
still, i'd love to help out in a somehwat limited capacity to get this ball rolling ;D
i agree with the not-for-profit idea. i'm bettin that star would probably like to see proceeds from the film go to benefit some of the programs for change she supports. -
-
Re: The movie
Mon, January 31, 2005 - 1:57 AMThat would be amazing! Thank you for your offer and partisipation.
I guess the next step would be a mission statement:
Who are we?
Why do we want this film made?
How do we plan to help make it happen?
What would we like to see happen after?
(Anything else?)
Need sleep now.

Who are we?
We are a bunch of people on tribe.net who are stoked for the novel The 5th Sacred Thing and will do whatever it takes to make it happen if the author approves and supports this.
Our Vision Statement
Through working to raise funds for causes that help the Earth sustain the forces directed against the tyranny of globalism and robot psychology directed towards the end of human spirit we will seek the knowledge and aid of all who can assist and manifest this significant story for our times in theaters near you.

Re: The movie
Wed, April 6, 2005 - 7:26 PMbeautiful Vision Sobey, truely...
what about a "documentary" style approach? more raw, and less scripted (a loose adaptation would be exciting), find great fresh actors who could carry the truth of their character through the concept of each scene... it is a low budget and very appealing genre right now - the "what if we do, what if we don't" future... even the mockumentary (thinkin' Spinal Tap) is better than Hollywood.
mists of avalon comes to mind as a TOTALLY botched film of a decent fairytale... which could have been great but came off fake and cold to me.
Funds would need to be large. Maybe it should be filmed in BC. ;)
much love to all. -

Re: The movie
Thu, February 15, 2007 - 7:21 PMDo we need to waste anymore? Just watch any movie or tv production and the environmental impact is atrocious. The industry is a blunder. I love being inspired by movies but how crazy is it that resources are used for pretending? Consuming to mimick is perposterous, especially when putting out the idea that this tremendous story, that could totally be prophetic, be materialized on screen. Nuts. No more movies. No more tv shows. STOP and just read and let your mind do the rest. I mentioned in a previous post that it could be made animated but unless its done volunteer and completely distrubted via the web for free; no cd's, no dvds, it would be a mistake. Like alot of them were making, thinking that its ok because its for a greater good. So many choices made like this make what we will eventually have to face; the reality that the only good was that it quelled our own feverish egotistical desires. Fuck it. Let go and let whatever was a movie be the only movies, and lets get on with being serious about what lies ahead. I dont want anyone to be Bird or Madrone, or worse... a steward, even a monster. Is it to late? Would making a movie change anything? Even with famous "stars", would it clean the water, air and earth? Read the book again if you have it. Maya talks about her violent protests being a means that did not justify the ends. She became what she fought against; her, Rio, and those who killed the killers. If a movie is made, it will make the truth a lie. Spread the word by being a witch in whatever way you speak for madre terra... be love and make the movie your life, live in black dragon house in your own home, love your lover(s), dance to drums and be free - for the us that is we, who would like others to see, even in the sacrifice of making a movie, that there is a way to be; captured so elegantly, by mother starhawk, in the 5th sacred thing.
-love
ps for any volunteers to make it animated, I am 100% in with very little skill but much passion and vision.

Re: The movie
Mon, April 23, 2007 - 10:14 PMHey folks,
If anyone wants to talk to Starhawk in person about this, she is teaching an Earth Activist Training (EAT) course in Portland Oregon right before the Village Building Convergence at Tryon Life Community Farm. Check out www.EarthActivistTraining.org for more info on the May course. This particular course is kinda low on attendance and could use some more students of anyone is interested.
I took EAT in January 2004. And I can tell you this course is probably one of the best things you can ever do for yourself and the planet. Beyond covering the basics of permaculture, you're going to participate in deep group dynamics, co-create a permaculture design that you can take into the real world, learn some basic direct action strategies and tactics, increase your nature awareness skills, and experience earth-based ritual on a daily basis. Honestly, I don't think words can fully describe the Earth Activist Training experience. You have to take it to understand.
Also, I'm purty darn certain Starhawk would be THRILLED to hear how much support she has for the movie!

Re: The movie
Tue, April 24, 2007 - 9:53 AMI just feel like crying. Several years ago I was practically homeless with one temporary job (teaching at a community college 3 to 4 hours out of Portland via bus). My extended family fearing I was going to be actually homeless and jobless gave me a one way ticket to leave for a teaching job in another country. Now I am economically stuck in a village filled with children who hate everyone not of their national identity (Gypsies, French, Chinese and anyone else), these children (and teachers as well) hate homosexuals, Pagans, muslims, Jews, communsts, left and anyone else (including themselves after they get passed their nationalism) . I was just responding with the leader of Cheee Siwash who wrote that they was working with Tryon Life Community Farm. Ironically if I was home (really home like in the place I was born and raised and think about every moment of my life) it would be literally next to Tryon Creek. So reading this post right now especially after wanting to meet Star Hawk for the last few decades just makes me want to cry. How the Hell did I get marooned in a village where there no wild spaces.
Well if anyone of you attend tell Star Hawk Blessed Be.
PS.. anyone have a job opening for a geography teacher with only a masters?

Starhawk: Earth Spirit, Earth Justice.
We live in tough times for the Earth and those who love her. Assaults on the
life support systems that sustain us have reached crisis proportions. Our
social and governmental institutions seem unable to cope with global warming
and environmental deterioration, or to respond effectively to catastrophes
like Hurricane Katrina and the flooding of New Orleans. Meanwhile, they
wage an unpopular war unchecked by massive protests.
Our disconnect from the Earth is part of a deeper gap, the split between
body and spirit that allows us to denigrate the very ground we stand on, and
that sees women, whose bodies bring life into the world, as lower and less
valued. Starhawk traces the connections between our assaults on the Earth
and our deep assumptions about power. To heal that split, we need to invoke
a deeper source of power, power-from-within.
Starhawk draws on her decades of writing and teaching, as well as her
front line activism for social
and environmental justice, and her experience teaching ecological design,
permaculture and bioremediation, to identify and invoke the great powers
working with us for the healing of the Earth.
Workshop will include booksigning at end courtesy of In Other Words.
